Big NEWS for 2012!!
We are pleased to announce that the long running and successful British Columbia Bluegrass Workshop has changed hands - and names - this season. Founders and longtime directors Jay Buckwold and Ada Cheung have passed the Sorrento based summer music workshop the reins to Nelson-based musicians Craig Korth and Julie Kerr.
The husband and wife team of Craig and Julie are both well known in the Western Canadian roots music community. As well as being known for his solo work, Craig played for years with the well-loved band Jerusalem Ridge, and Julie has had her own solo career and together they also played in the Calgary-based band Widowmaker. Craig has been a past instructor at the workshop, and both have attended as students. They didn't officially 'meet' at BCBW, but 12 years ago after a week at camp they decided to get married! And this year they will be bringing their two young daughters to the camp in the second week - young musicians in the making.
Nimblefingers - BC's 23rd Annual Bluegrass and Old-Time Workshop
it's going to be a great new 'season' in Western Canada's Bluegrass and Old-Time Scene.
In taking over the long successful heritage of the BCBW, Craig and Julie have told us that they plan on keeping up the tradition that participants from across Canada and the US have enjoyed at the BCBW over the past 22 years - great instructors, engaging workshops, fantastic accommodations, and lots of amazing music!
The dates of this summer's workshops are:
Week 1~ Sunday, August 19 to Friday, August 24
Week 2 ~ Sunday, August 26 to Friday, August 31
The Sorrento Bluegrass Festival will be held on Saturday August 25.
The proposed date for the Sorrento Centre phones to be open to accept your registration is Monday, March 5th.
Craig and Julie are busy firming up details and hiring staff, and will release the instructor lineup as soon as available.
Please keep checking the BCBW website within the next week or so for a 2012 Workshop update.

More about the BCBW:
Spend an inspiring, challenging, and joyous week with others who share your passion for bluegrass! Each August we're proud to host the British Columbia Bluegrass Workshops in Sorrento, BCabout 5 hours from Vancouver by car between Kamloops and Salmon Arm. Now in our 22nd year, we provide a friendly and noncompetitive environment for everyone from beginners to advanced players, with ample opportunity for group learning, electives, organized jam sessions, and many other spontaneous activities. There are student concerts, band scrambles, instructor concerts, campground picking sessions, and an old time dance. We hear from many of our regulars that the BCBW is what they look forward to the most each year. We offer two separate weeks of workshops, and many of our attendees stay for both!
Our home for the workshops, Sorrento Centre, is a beautiful retreat by the shores of Shuswap Lake operated by the Anglican Church of Canada. The site contains two lodges, cabins, and lots of campsites; other facilities include a covered amphitheatre, a private beach, and beautiful trails. The kitchen specializes in fine home-style cooking, now using fresh ingredients from their own organic garden! Sorrento Centre is also the location of our annual Bluegrass Festival, which will take place on August 28, 2011. |
